Pastoral, in its oldest sense, means the care of souls — and Deuteronomy calls us to love YHVH with all our soul. But how do we love God with all our soul? Spiritual direction tends and cares for the soul: we listen, we notice, and we trust that the Good Shepherd knows each of us by name. Jeremiah serves as spiritual director at Songbird Abbey, a family-based monastic community in Kansas City, where he and his wife raise four children, tend bees and an orchard, and keep the door open for those walking the path of the vows.
